We run 3 star training courses throughout the year. Successful performance at 3 star means kayakers can consider themselves an intermediate rather than a beginner. The three star course builds personal proficiency on white water and introduces the safety and rescue skills required to kayak unsupervised, with similar standard paddlers on sheltered flat water. As well as being a pre-requisite for the BCU Level 2 Coach award, the 3 star course teaches basic river-running skills, as well as harder technical flat water skills, like hanging and moving draws and prys. We also train you in Eskimo rolls and safety techniques for rescuing other kayakers in your group.
This course is overseen by experienced Level 3 BCU coaches. We treat the course like any other day on the water – we will try and teach you as much as we can, even if it’s well above the standard required. At the end of the day, you will be given personalised feedback by your coach and an action plan to work through. This course can be taken in isolation, or as a brush-up before the 3 star assessment on the following day.
Location
The course takes place on some easy moving water at a mutually convenient location. Typical venues include the river Irwell at Bury and the River Lune at Kirby Stephen. All public access courses take place within 30 mins of Manchester.
Pre Requisites
You should ideally already hold the 2* award (or have equivalent experience, equal to several months paddling). Please mention your experience level on your booking form.
Equipment
All boats and technical equipment can be hired for a small fee.
What our customers say
Really enjoyed the course, would highly recommend to anyone up here. You were really positive and encouraging, and the exercises were engaging. I learnt a lot not only about my paddling but also coaching ideas. Fantastic instruction; Great value. – Stef C, Liverpool.
